Learning with Test Valley Brass

The following bands provide opportunities for players of all ages 7 and over to learn brass instruments with Test Valley Brass.

Prelims

This is a really important section where we teach children and adults to make their first notes and the basics of reading music. Learning in small groups they progress to the stage where they can join either Frosty’s (children) or the Academy (adults).

Players receive tuition for 30 mins per week on Thursday evenings between 18:30 – 20:00.

Frosty's Band

This is for children who have progressed from our Prelims (beginners) section, and are ready to enjoy playing in an ensemble with a conductor. The music is simple, but great fun, with assessment steps along the way to challenge the players as they progress towards playing in our Youth Band.

We rehearse on Thursday evenings 18:30 – 20:00.

Youth Band

This band is open to all brass and percussion players under the age of 19, many of whom will have progressed from our beginners and children’s sections. The emphasis is on enjoying the music and playing together in an ensemble. This band takes part in concerts, and as players make progress they are encouraged to broaden their experience by also playing with Senior Band or Academy.

We rehearse on Thursday evenings 18:30 – 20:00.

Academy Band

The Academy Band is mainly for adults learning to play, or returning to playing after a break. Some younger players from our Youth Band also join Academy to broaden their experience. The repertoire is less challenging than for Senior Band, but nevertheless it’s still great fun, and many of our players are delighted and even surprised to find themselves playing in an ensemble making great music! This band also takes part at some local events and festivals, where it has met with good success.

We rehearse on Monday evenings 18:30 – 19:45.
